The save-the-date envelope
A6 is the size most save-the-dates and photo cards ship in, because a standard 4 x 6 print drops straight in. Its length divided by height is 1.37, comfortably inside the 1.3 to 2.5 range, so shape is never the problem.
One photo card in one A6 envelope is normally well under 1 oz. The things that change the price are a magnet backing, which adds weight and can make the piece stiff, and a second card slipped in behind the first.
Envelope or bare postcard?
A 4 x 6 card is inside the USPS postcard size limit of 4 1/4 x 6 in. Mailed bare, with the address and stamp on the back, it costs $0.65 instead of $0.82. On 100 save-the-dates that is $17.00 saved, plus the cost of the envelopes.
The trade-off is protection and privacy: a postcard goes through the machines uncovered, and the card stock has to be between 0.007 and 0.016 in thick. A photo magnet is thicker than that and does not qualify.
Magnets and rigid photo cards
If the piece does not bend easily, it is too rigid for the machines and the $0.49 surcharge applies. A thin flexible magnet usually bends fine; a thick one may not. Bend the sealed envelope gently around a large can. If it resists, plan for $1.31.
Portrait photos, landscape address
A vertical photo tempts people to address the envelope vertically too. On an A6 that is a mistake with no fix at the counter: USPS would read the envelope as 4 3/4 in long, under the 5 in minimum, and it cannot be mailed. Address along the 6 1/2 in side and let the card inside be whichever way up it likes.

Questions and answers
How much postage for a save-the-date in an A6 envelope?
$0.82 for up to 1 oz. A save-the-date magnet that is heavier or rigid can cost more.
Can I mail a 4x6 card without an envelope?
Yes. A 4 x 6 in card between 0.007 and 0.016 in thick mails at the postcard price of $0.65.
Do save-the-date magnets need extra postage?
Only if the envelope goes over 1 oz or is too stiff to bend easily. A stiff piece pays the $0.49 nonmachinable surcharge.
