A7.5 Envelope Postage

An A7.5 envelope is 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 in, a quarter inch bigger than an A7 each way. The size is a standard letter; what it holds usually puts it at $1.11 or $1.40.

Why people choose A7.5

The A7.5 exists to go around an A7. In a traditional double-envelope invitation, the suite sits in an unsealed inner A7, and that slides into the outer A7.5 that takes the address and stamps. It is also the fix for a 5 x 7 suite that has grown too thick for a snug A7: pocket folds, layered mounts and thick stock all need the extra room.

Two envelopes means more ounces

Shape is not an issue. 7.5 ÷ 5.5 is 1.36, inside the 1.3 to 2.5 range. The cost of this size is weight: a second envelope, and usually a liner in one of them, is paper you pay to mail on every piece.

If a single-envelope A7 suite weighs just under 2 oz, moving it into a double envelope will often tip it into the 3 oz step. That is $1.40 instead of $1.11, or $29.00 more per 100 invitations. Weigh the complete assembly, both envelopes included.

Watch the thickness

A letter can be at most 1/4 in thick. A pocket invitation inside two envelopes can get close. Past 1/4 in the piece is no longer a letter at all; it becomes a large envelope starting at $1.69, and it must be flexible to stay there.

Press the sealed envelope flat and measure the thickest point. If it is over 1/4 in, see vellum wraps and pocket folds for ways to slim it down.

The rectangle for a square card

An A7.5 has a second use. It is 5 1/2 in high, so a 5 1/4 in square card fits inside, and the envelope is still a rectangle. That avoids the $0.49 surcharge a matching square envelope would pay.

Questions and answers

How much postage does an A7.5 envelope need?

$0.82 at 1 oz, $1.11 at 2 oz, $1.40 at 3 oz and $1.69 up to 3.5 oz. Most double-envelope suites are 2 oz or more.

Does an inner envelope need its own stamp?

No. The inner envelope stays inside the outer one and is never mailed by itself. Only the outer envelope carries postage.

What fits in an A7.5 envelope?

A card up to 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 in, which makes it the standard outer envelope for an A7.

What if my A7.5 invitation is thicker than 1/4 inch?

It is priced as a large envelope, starting at $1.69 for 1 oz, and it has to be flexible.
