Postage for a 1 oz Invitation

An invitation weighing 1 oz or less needs $0.82, which is one Forever stamp, as long as the envelope is a flexible rectangle with nothing lumpy on it.

What fits in one ounce

One ounce is 28.35 grams. It is not much paper. A single invitation card in its envelope is typically inside it. A card plus a small reply card and reply envelope is often right at the line, and the result depends on the stock.

This is the weight where a kitchen scale earns its keep. If the scale reads 1.0 oz, weigh three or four finished pieces: any one of them at 1.1 oz means the whole batch should be stamped for 2 oz.

When 1 oz costs more than one stamp

Weight is only half the price. A 1 oz invitation pays $1.31 instead of $0.82 if it is nonmachinable, which means any of these:

Cheaper than one stamp

A bare card with no envelope, between 3 1/2 x 5 in and 4 1/4 x 6 in, mails at the postcard price of $0.65. That suits save-the-dates and reply cards. A 5 x 7 card is too big for it and pays the letter price even without an envelope.

For a whole guest list

At $0.82 each, 100 invitations cost $82.00 and 150 cost $123.00. Forever stamps bought today stay valid for 1 oz letters after any future price change, so buying early carries no risk.

A quick 1 oz checklist

You are at one Forever stamp if all of these are true: the finished piece is 1 oz or less, the envelope is a rectangle, it bends easily, it feels smooth and flat, and the address runs along the long side.
